ACT OF COURAGE

Capt. Muhammad Ammar Hussain Shaheed (Sitara-e-Jurrat)

Captain Muhammad Ammar Hussain was commissioned in 63 Frontier Force Regt on 14 October 1994. He was serving with 1 Commando Bn (SSG) and attached with 12 NLI Bn during the Kargil conflict. The young officer was eager to lead from the front and was popular amongst all ranks due to his innocence, physical robustness and charming personality.

During the Kargil conflict in 1999, he was tasked with carrying out interdiction operations and disrupting logistics of Indian troops in no man's land along the LoC. On the night of 28/29 June 1999, he raided an enemy OP (Observation Post) which was established on a dominating feature. He planned the raid in such a manner that the Indians could not observe or detect his move until death was at their heads. Capt. Ammar completely destroyed the OP killing 4x Indian soldiers.

On 5 July 1999 when Capt. Sher Khan's attack team was subjected to intense fire and heavy artillery shelling followed by physical assault of battalion minus strength, Capt. Ammar came to his support and covered their safe move to the target. With a handful 22x personnel, attacked Indian Army camp along the LoC in Drass sector. He kept on fearlessly fighting and never gave up. After Capt. Sher was martyred, Capt. Ammar took over the command of remaining 11x personnel. He inspired them to brave the daunting circumstances and charged on to the Indians under the battle cries of 'Allah u Akbar'.

In disregard to his personal safety, the son of soil exhibited the highest standards of valor and devotion while undertaking extremely dangerous and arduous task killing many Indian soldiers. However in the ensuing combat, Capt. Ammar sustained serious injuries and later on embraced Shahadat. His body lies somewhere in the mountains which could unfortunately not be recovered due to inhospitable terrain and the fact that the battle occurred in no man’s land.

In recognition to his indomitable spirit and supreme sacrifice, Capt. Muhammad Ammar Hussain was awarded Sitara-e-Jurrat.
